Smallish Breed Puppy Training

Why dog lovers have got this preconceived notion that small breed pups are more problematic to discipline than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, no matter what its size should not pose a problem.

Small dog training, is no different from training a dog of any other size. Although training any canine will have its peculiarities, pertaining to its breed, almost all other aspects remain exactly the same, and the strategy to training the puppy should stay the same, irrespective its size.

However, I will allow myself to be corrected here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may create problems in two aspects, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nevertheless, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.

If a small breed dog is aggressive and poses a training problem, or if a smallish breed dog cannot be potty trained or poses complications in being toilet trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us examine how and why.

Aggression.

Smaller dogs are preferred because they are sweet, they are like toy characters. Owners enjoy having their dog sit on their laps. This particular indulgence is where the trouble commences. The natural aggressive nature of the animal, is to take ownership over its space, its food, even its master; all dogs desire to be the alpha dog.

It is the aggressive streak in the puppy that causes it to get on to the lap of its pack leader, specially when there are plenty of people present in the room.

This is a clear act of aggression. Instead of chiding the animal, every owner with the exception of no one, would pet the puppy, even though it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, encouraging the aggressive streak in the dog. As a result the owner has okayed the dog's inherent need to be the alpha dog.

Growling and snapping at a much bigger dog is another obvious act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people around, this is regarded as cute, because one dog is tiny while the other is big. Most owners praise the puppy instead of scolding it, when it exhibits this aggression against a larger dog.

The above mentioned are but good examples as to why small puppies are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is problematic.

Toilet Training

Owners tend to lug their small dogs around no matter where they go, even when they are at home and that makes it plain difficult to potty train them

It comes natural to the owners of small breed dogs to tote the animal to the spot where the pup should do its dirty business and then cart it back into the house.

It is this pattern of carrying the dog to the outdoors to poop that is the cause of all problems. In addition, since the pup is normally carried around so often it has no way of it indicating to or cautioning the owner that it has to go to the bathroom.

Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be taken to their potty area on a leash. If owners stop carrying their tiny breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.

Dog crate training, is the best part of canine training, and so it must be, even in Small Dog Training.
