Tell your dog firmly that you want him to sit, then place your hand over his hind quarters and gently push him down into a sitting position, when it is down say sit and make a fuss of him by patting him, then give him a biscuit or what ever treats you have brought along to reward him with.
By regularly repeating this exercise, your dog will obey your order and sit, because he knows that by carrying out your orders he will get a treat and also because he can see that you are pleased with his efforts. Eventually your dog will obey you automatically, and there will be no need to give him a reward.
