An Erratic High School Student Exhibits Numerous Alcohol-Related Problems, Gets Discharged From School, And Has To See The School Therapist
Stephen was a seventeen year old high school junior who was displaying numerous alcohol-related problems at school. Therefore, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be permitted to come back to school.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to clarify his school suspension to his Mother and Father. His Mother and Father were "fairly conventional" and told Stephen that getting thrown out of school was not a workable educational game plan. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his feet that could probably inhibit his educational aspirations for the remainder of his adult life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mother and Father were very unhappy that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.
It was evident that his parents were completely in agreement with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better come to the understanding that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his talk with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in due course agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his first period class.
When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she at once reviewed all of the alcohol-related issues Stephen had experienced and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related actions were such a cause for concern.
Quite sincerely, Stephen was unsure why the principal informed him that he had to see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking situation? Since virtually all of his friends drink the same amount that he does, in essence, drinking shouldn't be such a big thing. Stated more directly, if almost everybody is drinking, why is this such a big deal?
In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to thwart his ability to function as an accountable young man. As verbalized by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your classmates drink wine coolers, wine, hard liquor, or beer does not mean that it's right for you."
Luckily, Miss Pender was very organized for her discussion with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that outlined different drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of figures and reports that applied chiefly to teens.
After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was evident that what Miss Pender made known to Stephen was a real jolt to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to explain the long term and the short term effects of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to verify what she was saying with alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that related to everyone in general, and principally to underage drinkers.
Definitely, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen promptly comprehended why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his classmates any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she reviewed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
